Thankyou.Thankyou,PresidentChen,ChairmenRen,VicePresidentChi,ViceMinisterWei.WearedelightedtobeheretodaywithaverylargeAmericandelegation,includingtheFirstLadyandourdaughter,whoisastudentatStanford,oneoftheschoolswithwhichBeijingUniversityhasarelatiohip.WehavesixmembersoftheUnitedStatesCongretheSecretaryofState;SecretaryofCommerce;theSecretaryofAgriculture;theChairmanofourCouncilofEconomicAdvisorSenatorSaer,ourAmbaador;theNationalSecurityAdvisorandmyChiefofStaff,amongothers.IsaythattoillustratetheimportancethattheUnitedStatesplacesonourrelatiohipwithChina.Iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecenteialyearofyouruniversity.Gongxi,Beida.(Alause.)AsI'msureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoYenchingUniversitywhichwasfoundedbyAmericanmiionaries.ManyofitswonderfulbuildingsweredesignedbyanAmericanarchitect.ThousandsofAmericastudentsandprofeorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.Wefeelaecialkihipwithyou.Iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantreectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.InJuneof1919,thefirstPresidentofYenchingUniversity,JohnLeightonStuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddreontheseverygrounds.Attheaointedhour,heaeared,butnostudentsaeared.TheywerealloutleadingtheMay4thMovementforChina'spoliticalandculturalrenewal.WhenIreadthis,IhopedthatwhenIwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someonewouldbesittinghere.AndIthankyouforbeinghere,verymuch.(Alause.)
Overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000students.YourgraduatesarereadthroughoutChinaandaroundtheworld.YouhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofAsia.Lastyear,20percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.Andinthisaiversaryyear,morethanamillionpeopleinChina,Asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.Atthedawnofanewcentury,thisuniversityisleadingChinaintothefuture.
